Bloody Snow

This is a small map containing a minor German V2 launch facility situated in a snow-covered, rocky landscape. Two gunnery domes are to protect the V2 rocket and the radar dish on top of the bunker. Under the ground there are several long corridors providing back door access for the Allies.

Presentation / Technical

The most advanced pieces of brushwork in this map seem to be the sharp rocks scattered over the terrain. A couple of instances of Z-fighting indicate that numerous rocks intersect others. On this part the brushwork isn't very neat, but the end result still looks pretty good and convincible.

The terrain is made from a number of patch meshes that overlap each other. This results in some seeming at the locations where two meshes meet, but you can only see that from a long distance. More troublesome are the dark shades that result from this technique. As you can clearly see on the shots, black lines divide the terrain causing it to look unrealistic.

The texturing is very basic and not very varied. Basically the author used only one snow, concrete, tree and rock texture. This makes the map pretty boring and hard to navigate, because it looks the same everywhere. A good point is that I didn't notice any real texture misalignments.

The lighting isn't very pleasant but effective. Outdoors there's one shade of ambient light, inside caged bulbs light the bunker. The lighting doesn't look very natural but rather a forced way to get the architecture visible.

Playability / Game Flaws

I couldn't find a server that has this map in its rotation and honestly that didn't amaze me. The map is very small and just not set for fun. The Axis have two machine guns at their disposal which can oversee about two thirds of the terrain. Moreover, one of the Allied objectives is at a rooftop which is only accessible from two easy-to-defend ways. I think a couple of skilled Axis players can hold off hords of Allies. Despite mediocre vis design this map runs very smoothly. The mtex counter stalls below 6 which ensures a much better frame rate than the original maps. This allows players with low-end machines like me to have some fun nonetheless, if the map would be on a server of course.

Conclusion

This is map is too basic and too small to be really fun to play. It doesn't seem very balanced and isn't very nice to see. The good framerate makes up for something, but what's the benefit of a good framerate when the gameplay isn't?
