Africa Backstreets

This map is set in the backstreets of an town somewhere in the African desert. Its a small map, most suitable to close combat engagements. It will probably be ideal for clan matches but anymore than 16 players and it will turn into a nightmare.

Presentation / Technical

Scale. If there is one thing that really annoys me when playing a map, its when the mapper has seemingly ignored scale. In AfricaBS, <<[AC]>>David has got his proportions, for the most part, wrong. Huge windows are surrounded by even bigger window sills, contrive to make the level look comical. Thats not the end of the bad brushwork. I really recommend that the maps creator read the good arches tutorial at this site.

Every single arch is woefully made, and just detracts from the map. On the plus side, before I'm accused of being too harsh, the texturing is adequate apart from the scale of some of the window textures. The lighting is average, with most of the map at least lit, apart from a pitch black room where you can see all the models inside it. If it was not for the errors in scale and the whole arch fiasco, the map might actually be fairly well made. The mapper has some good ideas, such as the well made crator or the circular "flowerbed".

Playability / Game Flaws

The layout of the map is fairly good, but can be constrictive at times. Again the mapper shows a few flashes of thought, but its really nothing to write home about. I found myself having to retrace my steps time and time again which just got me frustrated. For all its flaws the map is still fairly fun to play, with a relatively small number of people.

As I said before, Any more than 16 players just means that your getting shot where u spawn. At least the map sticks closely to its theme and it does attempt to look as it should. I'm really unsure about the wierd mushroom tower, though I applaud the mapper for his efforts.

Conclusion

I feel that Africa Backstreets is not a good map, but the author has made a good effort and has the imagination to get much better. Others may disagree with me but then again i'm a mapper with purist beliefs. It can be fun for a blast but I would not recommend it for a server rotation.
